The atemoya is a hybrid of two fruits – the sugar apple and the cherimoya. The fruit is popular in Asia, South and Central America, Cuba, and the Mid-East.
The flesh is not segmented like the Sugar Apple but more similar to the Cherimoya. It is very juicy and slightly sweet, a bit like a piña colada. When it's ripe the fruit can be eaten right out of the shell with a spoon, like custard.
The atemoya needs artificial hand pollination to produce the best quality fruits. The 'Geffner' variety produces without hand pollination.
